Match The Truck To The Warehouse

A reach truck is designed for warehouse stacking, using a mast or carriage that reaches forward to handle the load. Its layout can help work within narrower aisles than many counterbalance trucks. It is still essential to check the actual truck, pallet and racking combination rather than rely on the general machine type.

Reach truck hire is useful during seasonal peaks, a warehouse move or an interruption to an existing fleet. It can also support a new racking layout while you assess the continuing requirement. Tell us the site postcode, working dates and storage arrangement so the right questions are addressed before equipment is proposed.

A standard warehouse reach truck is not automatically suitable for an outside yard or uneven route. Its wheels and ground clearance are usually designed around appropriate warehouse floors. If the truck must move between buildings, explain every threshold, ramp and external section of the route.

Capacity At Height Is The Key Check

The capacity needed at the highest working position is more useful than a nominal truck rating. Reach truck capacity can change with lift height and load centre. Provide the heaviest pallet, its dimensions and the highest placement point, and ask for the proposed machine’s capacity data at that combination.

Include the weight of the pallet and any handling attachment. Long pallets, unusual load shapes and unstable contents need particular attention. A familiar load may behave differently when placed at height, so the specification must reflect the real materials being stored.

Record the top beam height and allow the supplier to assess the lift needed to place and retrieve a pallet safely. Overhead sprinklers, roof structures and services are also relevant. Never assume that a mast which reaches a beam can operate safely beneath every obstruction above it.

Measure The Aisle And The Travel Route

Aisle clearance depends on the specific reach truck and the load it carries. Measure between the points that actually limit movement, including racking protection, stored goods and projections. Give the pallet orientation and dimensions so the working aisle requirement can be checked against the supplier’s information.

Doorway height matters even when the truck is not lifting. A tall mast may be unable to pass through a low shutter in its lowered position. Measure the delivery entrance and the complete route to the working aisle rather than just the main warehouse door.

Floor quality affects stability and safe travel. Describe joints, damaged areas, slopes and changes in level, and send photographs where useful. If racking or floor issues are already known, address them separately rather than expecting a different hire truck to compensate for an unsuitable working area.

Battery, Charger And Operator Preparation

Reach trucks are commonly electric, so charging needs to be part of the hire specification. Confirm the battery type, charger requirements and available electrical supply. A plug on the wall does not establish compatibility with the proposed charger, and any installation work needs appropriate assessment.

The charging plan must fit your operating pattern. Explain whether the truck will work occasional hours or repeated shifts and whether planned breaks are available. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the specific battery and charger, including any ventilation and fire precautions identified by the site assessment.

An operator experienced on a counterbalance forklift may need conversion training for a reach truck. HSE guidance distinguishes basic training, job-specific training and familiarisation. Your employer’s authorisation should relate to the truck and work being undertaken rather than rely on a general claim that someone has a forklift licence.

How Reach Truck Hire Is Arranged

Begin with the racking heights, load details, aisle measurements and floor information. Share the start date, duration and expected hours. The proposed truck should then be checked against those details, including capacity at height and its lowered mast clearance.

Review the quotation and agree the charger, attachments, transport and support package. Confirm how delivery can be unloaded and where the handover will take place. A warehouse without a suitable dock may need a different transport solution, so resolve this before a delivery is booked.

At handover, review the instructions, machine condition and current examination report. Keep the safe working information accessible and complete the appropriate familiarisation. Agree the collection process and report defects during the hire through the route stated in the contract.

Safety Responsibilities And Hire Cost

The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 apply to the suitability, maintenance and use of reach trucks at work. The Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 apply to their lifting function. Hired equipment needs the same attention to safe operation as an owned truck, including pre-use checks and a suitable traffic plan.

Reach truck hire cost depends on lift height, capacity, battery arrangement, duration, operating hours and transport. Specialist specifications and support inclusions can affect availability and the quotation. Ask for the whole package to be stated, including collection and any extra hours, so you can compare suitable machines fairly.

If your handling is mainly unloading vehicles or moving goods around an outdoor yard, review counterbalance forklift hire as well. A clear description of the full job helps avoid paying for a warehouse truck that only suits part of the work.

Questions About Reach Truck Hire

Can A Reach Truck Work Outside?

A reach truck is usually specified for suitable indoor warehouse floors. Outdoor suitability depends on the exact model, surface, gradients and weather exposure. Do not assume a standard machine can cross a rough yard or steep threshold. Describe the complete travel route and ask for written confirmation of suitability before arranging hire.

Is Counterbalance Training Enough For A Reach Truck?

Reach truck operation may require conversion training if the operator has only been trained on a counterbalance machine. HSE guidance calls for training appropriate to the equipment, task and workplace, followed by familiarisation. The employer should assess competence and authorise the operator for the actual truck being supplied before work starts.
